You CAN travel to the Dominican Republic from the U.S. without a passport, but not for long. The new legislation that makes it a requirement to have a Passport to get back to the U. S. comes into effect on Dec. 31, 2006 at 11:59 p.m.

Even though you can, it is highly recommended that you have a passport in order to get out of the Dominican Republic. There have been cases of people that have been turned back from the airport, while trying to leave the Dominican Republic without a Passport. For further information please see links below.

Nooo. you need a passport. Since 911 it is required for you to have a passport to travel outside of the states. You can leave, but if you do not have a passport, you will not be able to get back into the country.
Head to your local post office for the pass port forms.

IT'SS ALWAYS GOOD TO HAVE A PASSPORT AROUND FOR THE JUST INCASE..
You need the passport. If you are not in a rush, try the US Post Office, it's less expensive.
